Hospital ranked among best for Quality and Patient Experience

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) ranked South County Hospital among the best in the country, awarding it 5 Stars, the top rating possible in categories that measure Hospital Quality and Patient Experience.

South County Hospital is one of two hospitals in Rhode Island to earn the 5 Star rating for 2020, and one of 407 among more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide to receive the highest marks.

The CMS Hospital Quality Star Rating was created by Medicare to help healthcare consumers make informed decisions by simplifying complex criteria that measures healthcare quality.

The overall hospital rating includes a variety of measures calculated by CMS, the federal agency that runs the Medicare program, including the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and the Hospital Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR) Program.

The categories include:

• Survey of patients’ experiences
• Timely & effective care
• Complications & deaths
• Unplanned hospital visits
• Psychiatric unit services
• Payment & value of care

Hospital Compare publishes its overall hospital rating scores to provide consumers with a starting point for comparing a hospital to others locally and nationwide.

Along with the overall hospital rating, Hospital Compare includes information on many important aspects of quality, such as rates of infection and complications, and patients’ experiences, based on survey results.

South County Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and is the recipient of numerous accreditations, awards and recognitions for high quality care and excellence in patient satisfaction.
