Support Groups

South County Hospital offers the southern Rhode Island community a wide variety of Wellness & Education programs, classes, support groups, lectures and health screenings. Upcoming programs are listed in our Calendar of Events. A listing of our regular programs can be found below. Cancer Support Group
South County Hospital offers the community a free cancer support group. Patients and family members are welcome. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month in the Therapy Department from 4pm-5pm, adjacent to the Radiology Department. The switchboard is always notified of cancellation due to weather. Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
South County Hospital offers a twelve-week, medically supervised cardiac rehab program in a state-of-the-art facility. The program features Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Respiratory Therapists, and Registered Dietitians. There is also a twelve-week "Wellness" or "Cardiac Maintenance" follow-up program. Cardiac Rehabilitation Lecture Series
South County Hospital offers half-hour lectures on Mondays in an informal atmosphere, including audience discussion. Spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend. All lectures are conveniently scheduled to coincide with cardiac rehabilitation exercise sessions (8-8:30 am; 10:30-11 am; and 2-2:30 PM). Call 782-8020, ext. 3484.

Childbirth Education
South County Hospital's Family Centered Childbirth Service, Bright Beginnings, offers twelve different education and support services for expectant mothers and fathers. The goal of Bright Beginnings is to support new and expanding families by providing a nurturing, empowering environment to encourage informed, confident parenting. Diabetes Management and Support Group
South County Hospital offers a variety of programs and services for patients and their families. The Diabetes Management and Support Group meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Potter Conference Center from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM and is facilitated by Certified Diabetes Educators. This program is free and registration is not required. There is also a six-week education program that teaches about diet management, medications, exercise, and home glucose monitoring. Diabetes Education
South County Hospital offers a six-week program that teaches individuals and their families about the many aspects of diabetes, including diabetic diet management, medications, exercise and home glucose monitoring. Instruction is provided by Certified Diabetes Educator Nurses, Dietitians, Pharmacists, and Exercise Physiologists. For more information, please call 782-8020, ext. 3366.

Infant and Child CPR
South County Hospital encourages all new parents and parents of young children to learn how to protect their children in case of choking or other emergencies (instructors are American Heart Association certified). Course includes safety information and emergency techniques. Registration is required and there is a fee of $25. Call 792-2229 or 788-1999.

Lactation Support Service
South County Hospital's Board Certified Lactation Consultants provide expert breast-feeding support, evaluation, assistance, and resources to support a mother's choice to breast-feed. A "Warm Line" is available 7 days a week to aid nursing mothers who have problems or questions. You may also schedule a private consultation with a Certified Lactation Consultant, by appointment only. The office hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Call 788-1226.

New Moms' Club
Join other new moms and their babies to share support and insight in a casual and social group setting. Led by a certified childbirth educator and an experienced OB nurse, the New Moms' Club is a great opportunity for you to get answer and share tips on a variety of topics, including feeding, baby sleeplessness, colic, parental sleep deprivation, postpartum stress, and more. Certified Lactation Consultants are also available to answer questions. The group meets at the Hospital every other Tuesday from 10 am to noon, and every other Friday from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Community Center in North Kingstown. Nutrition Counseling
South County Hospital's outpatient Nutrition Counseling Services are available for help with a variety of diet and nutrition issues, including Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes, Reactive Hypoglycemia, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol and Hyperlipidemia, Overweight and Obesity, Celiac Disease, Crohn's Disease, and others. Pediatric Diabetes Support Group
South County Hospital offers a Pediatric Diabetes Support Group for children with diabetes and their families. The group meets the last Tuesday of the month at the Cardiopulmonary Suite in the Medical Office Building, located at 70 Kenyon Avenue. The group meets from 6:30pm to 7:45pm. It is facilitated by Certified Diabetes Educators and is free, no registration is required. For more information, please call 782-8020, ext. 3366.

Pregnancy Loss Support Group
South County Hospital offers a free support group for those who have experienced miscarriage, fetal demise, stillbirth, no matter when the loss occurred. Meetings are held at the Hospital's Potter Conference Center. Partners, friends, and family members are welcome. Please call 782-8020, ext. 3255 for meeting times and schedule.

Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise
South County Hospital, in a combined Cardiopulmonary and Bright Beginnings program, offers these two programs for expectant and postpartum moms to stay fit, get ready for baby, and tone up afterwards. With the help and guidance of skilled clinical professionals, exercise is held in state-of-the-art facilities during an eight-week session (with new sessions that start each week). Pulmonary Rehabilitation
South County Hospital offers a twelve-week, medically supervised pulmonary rehab program in a state-of-the-art facility. The program features Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Registered Dietitians, and Respiratory Therapists. For more information, call 782-8020, ext. 3484.

Quit Smoking/Smoking Cessation
South County Hospital offers a four-week program that combines informative lectures and exercise, with the theme, "Fit to Quit." The program meets at the Hospital's Wellness & Fitness Center. Registration is required and there is a fee. In addition, there is a follow-up maintenance program available (for an additional monthly fee). For more information, call 788-1697.

Tick Hotline/Vector Borne Disease
South County Hospital offers a 24-hour Tick Hotline that offers instructions on how to remove a tick from the skin, information on how to reduce the number of ticks on your property, information on the risk of tick borne disease, details about early and long-term symptoms of Lyme disease, information on Babesiosos, and information on tick and mosquito repellents and personal protection. Weight Loss Program
South County Hospital offers a twelve-week supervised weight loss program that includes individual diet and weight management consultants with a Registered Dietitian, along with an exercise program. Exercise programs are tailored to individual needs, designed and supervised by Exercise Physiologists. Enrollment is ongoing (open enrollment). In addition there are maintenance programs available. Work Site Health Program
South County Hospital's Occupational Health Services offers businesses the resources they need to keep their work force healthy. There are services for employers who look at "Wellness" as a work place program, to assess risk, implement risk reduction, and positively impact the health of employees.
