After a rigorous review process, the South County Hospital Sleep Disorders Lab has received a five year accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). Accreditation standards have been developed to ensure the highest quality of care is delivered to sleep disorder patients. AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which the medical community and the public can evaluate sleep medicine services. The Standards for Accreditation ensure that sleep medicine providers display and maintain proficiency in areas such as testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training.
The Sleep Disorder Treatment Lab at South County Hospital offers the residents of southern Rhode Island a resource for the diagnosis of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, which affects twelve million Americans and left untreated can cause serious health risks. If you snore, have trouble sleeping, or wake up tired after a full night's sleep, speak to your physician about referring you to the Sleep Disorders Lab or call 401 788-1667.
Your sleep study
Your sleep study takes place overnight in the Sleep Disorders Lab, and involves measuring your brain waves, muscle tone, heartbeat, breathing patterns, and body movements. The Sleep Disorder Treatment Lab can accommodate patients five nights a week.
Health risks of Sleep Apnea
Sleep studies are most often ordered for individuals where sleep apnea is suspected. Untreated, sleep apnea can cause and exacerbate high blood pressure, as well as cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency, and headaches. And because sleep apnea sufferers are always tired, untreated sleep apnea affects job performance and puts those suffering from it at risk for automobile accidents.
