Frequently Asked Questions

The new Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center at South County Hospital is southern Rhode Island's resource for the latest advancements in medical imaging. When you choose South County Hospital for your x-ray services, you can be assured of the most sophisticated ultrasound imaging technology available, a superior staff, and an environment designed for your privacy and comfort.

What are x-rays?
X-rays are a form of radiant energy, like light or radio waves. X-rays can penetrate the body, producing pictures of internal structures to be viewed on film or on a computer or TV monitor. In some cases, x-rays are used to assist with the placement of tubes or other devices in the body or with other therapeutic procedures. When used with care, x-rays are safe. Radiologists and x-ray technologists are trained to use the minimum amount of radiation necessary to obtain the needed results. The amount of radiation used in most examinations is very small, and no radiation remains after an x-ray exam.

Board Certified Radiologists, highly trained staff
At the Outpatient Diagnostic Center, your x-ray tests are performed by licensed and certified technologists and interpreted by experienced Board Certified radiologists. Our PACS (Picture Archiving and Storage System) allows us to maintain your imaging studies electronically, creating a permanent and easily accessible electronic record-a great benefit should you require emergency care or treatment. Each year, the Diagnostic Imaging Center performs thousands of x-ray exams. Among the most common are x-ray tests of the chest, extremities, lumbar and cervical spine, and the GI series.
