Frequently Asked Questions

The new Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center at South County Hospital is southern Rhode Island's resource for the latest advancements in medical imaging. When you choose South County Hospital for your ultrasound imaging services, you can be assured of the most sophisticated ultrasound imaging technology available, a superior staff, and an environment designed for your privacy and comfort.

What is Ultrasound Imaging?
Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method of "seeing" inside the human body through the use of high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound is a useful way of examining many of the body's internal organs. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show movement of internal tissues and organs, blood flow, and heart and valve functions, and can reveal the source of swelling, infection, or pain in the body. Each year, the Outpatient Diagnostic Imaging Center performs thousands of ultrasound studies. Among the most common are obstetrical, pelvic, breast ultrasound and abdominal ultrasound.

Board Certified Radiologists, highly trained staff
At the Outpatient Diagnostic Center, your ultrasound tests are performed by ARDMS certified sonographers and interpreted by experienced Board Certified radiologists. Our PACS (Picture Archiving and Storage System) allows us to maintain your imaging studies electronically, creating a permanent and easily accessible electronic record-a great benefit should you require emergency care or treatment.
