South County Hospital, long recognized for its specialty in orthopedics, was the first hospital in Rhode Island to offer knee replacement patients the option of a gender-specific knee implant. Although knee implants have always come in many sizes, the gender-specific implant is designed to be more compatible with a woman's anatomy, allowing for better function and greater comfort.

Why is the gender-specific knee implant such an important innovation?
The number of women having knee placement has grown significantly. In fact, two-thirds of knee replacement patients are women. Based on pioneering research, the Zimmer Gender Solutions Knee is designed to optimally fit the female anatomy based on three distinct and scientifically documented shape differences between men's and women's knees.

  • The narrower shape is proportionally contoured to the entire bone to provide a more precise fit.
  • The thinner shape in front more appropriately matches the female anatomy, so it feels natural and not bulky.
  • The increased groove angle allows for better tracking--how the kneecap moves. Because the angle between the pelvis and knee affects tracking, and women tend to have a greater angle than men, this design allows for a more comfortable, natural feel.
