Refresher Childbirth Education
Refresher Classes are suggested for couples who have completed a childbirth preparation class for a previous pregnancy. Classes are taught by a certified childbirth educator and are offered throughout the year.
Lactation Services
Our certified lactation consultants offer moms classes, one-on-one sessions and the Warm Line, 401 788-1226, a lactation support hotline. You are welcome to use these services whether you had your baby at South County Hospital or not. The South County Hospital Maternity Services program was the first in the state to receive Baby-Friendly designation from The World Health Organization for the promotion and support of breastfeeding.
New Moms' Club
The Hospital's New Moms' Club provides support to new moms and their babies in a casual, group setting. A certified childbirth educator and OB nurse leads the group, facilitating discussion and education on a variety of topics, including feeding, baby sleeplessness, colic, parental sleep deprivation and postpartum stress. Certified lactation consultants are also on hand to answer questions.
The group meets every Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Potter Conference Center (at South County Hospital). In addition, a group meets every Friday from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the South County Hospital Medical & Wellness Center in East Greenwich.
Parenting Class
Most moms and dads have questions about caring for their new baby once they return home from the hospital. Knowing what to expect during the early weeks and months of parenthood will help you care for your newborn with confidence. Parenting classes should be taken in late pregnancy. Class dates vary. Please check the calendar for times, dates, and more information.
Sibling Class and Tour
Include "big" sisters and brothers in plans for the arrival of the new baby. This program includes a tour of the South County Hospital Women & Newborn Care Unit and a special class using visual aids to help children develop an understanding of being a big sister or brother. Kids even get to create a drawing for the baby carriage! Classes are for 3 years old and up. Preregistration is required for this free tour. Check the calendar for dates and times.
Infant/Child CPR Classes
This class orients you with CPR for infants and children. Included in this class is helping victims who are choking. This class is geared toward new parents, grandparents and babysitters who want to learn CPR. For more information, call 401 788-1999.
